Resolutions for Your House!
Time flies and 2019 is just days away. The last year has flown by and it’s time to be thinking about those New Years resolutions. Of course, you could focus on the more common resolutions, but goodies are hard to give up. My advice? Go with something more instant—house resolutions! Here are a few New Years resolutions to consider:
GET A FACELIFT!
Even a small change in your home can be a big facelift! It doesn’t have to be the whole place! Consider making changes in just one room in the house and see what you think! Painting is one of the cheapest ways to get an (almost) instant makeover. It is low risk because if you end up not liking it, you are just a brush away from undoing it. Don’t be afraid to embrace the magic of paint!
If you don’t feel like painting, try some light decorating. You don’t have to buy all new furniture (or even buy anything!). Start small with some new decorative pillows. If you’re on a budget, there are many free redecorating options too! Switch around your artwork, rearrange your furniture or repurpose that exercise room into something you’ll actually use and enjoy!
GO ON A DIET!
Counting calories and salads with no dressing…oh my! Decluttering is one way to “lose weight” that is much easier than a juice cleanse diet. Don’t try to do it all at once—you’ve got a whole year! Dedicate one day per month to going through a room of the house. Go through every inch of that room—closets, drawers, cabinets, everything. Clutter builds up fast, especially if you’ve been in your house for many years. Don’t just jam it in a box and shove it in the garage—get rid of it by donating or sell it! The hardest part of decluttering is being real with yourself. Ask yourself the questions: Do I actually use this? Do I need this? If you don’t need it or haven’t used it in the last 6 months, get rid of it! You’d be surprised how freeing it is to get rid of all the unwanted junk in your life. Bonus money can be made on items you decide to sell, too! Sometimes less really is more.
GET MORE EXERCISE!
I don’t expect you to do 100 jumping jacks and run 10 miles every morning, unless that is your thing. However, the more exercise you get, the better you feel and the healthier you are. A house is no different. Resolve to stay in front of maintenance issues in the New Year. It will pay big time both in the aesthetics of your house and later on when you go to sell. Few things cost a seller more than ignored maintenance items and repairs won’t get cheaper the longer you wait.
New Year’s Resolutions do not have to be a thing of dread and groaning. Resolutions also don’t have to be something instantly achievable. Sometimes change takes time and the time is going to pass whether you begin the steps towards change or not, so might as well make the time count. Happy New Year!
