2019 Home Design Trends (as seen in real homes)
We are only 3 months into 2019, but it is already flying by! Design trends come and go and what’s considered trendy elsewhere may not necessarily match what is trendy in our turf. It is fun to see how home design styles and decor morph over time. Now, I don’t mean what the magazines and internet say is in style—I’m referring to what is actually being put into real homes with your friendly neighbors in East Texas. Check out some of these popular features, as seen in East Texas homes near you:
- A House with a Brain?! – Smart home devices are getting more and more popular in our area as prices are getting more affordable on security systems, thermostats, smart home hubs, cameras, plugs, etc. I think we will continue to see technology used inside the home more and more as the technology advances.
- Get Outside, Y’all! – Utilizing outdoor space is not a new concept at all. However, more focus is placed on outdoor spaces than ever before (especially when buying or selling a property)—from outdoor kitchens, entertaining spaces, play areas, patios, gardens or a mix of several or all the above.
- Hard Floors – It may surprise some to know that carpet is the least desired flooring type. Hardwood, tile, vinyl laminate and other hard surface flooring is in high demand with most folks, although some do still prefer carpet in bedrooms. There are many hard surface flooring types that are popular in East Texas—the wood-look ceramic tile is being spotted more and more as well as the versatile and sturdy vinyl plank flooring.
- The Modern Farmhouse – This trend may have originated in Waco, but it is still huge the world over. From white kitchens, shiplap, shabby chic wood signs and cotton wreaths—this trend has truly sunk in deep. I think the trend is on the downward slope though, but it seems nearly every house has some farmhouse type nod, even if it’s just one small décor item.
- Store more! – There is one thing that “too much of a good thing” will never apply to and that is storage. Seriously, there is no such thing as too many closets, am I right? I don’t and will never consider storage a type of trend because I think it is timeless, but there is a trend of custom storage being a highly desired feature. Functionality is definitely the driver of this trend that encourages making use of your space.
The internet can give us an instantaneous glimpse of “high design” with the stroke of the keyboard. However, as we all know, sometimes those designer homes are not truly designed for real living. To me, the trends that are being created with real homes are what are truly interesting. At the end of the day, the only trends you should follow is the one that makes your home a great place to live for you.
