October House Maintenance “Honey-Do” List
It’s officially
pumpkin time and before you know it, it will be Christmas music in
surround sound. This month is a great time to get a head start (or to
catch up, let’s be honest) on some home upkeep. Check out these
October home maintenance tips for your home:
- Battery
On: Change the batteries in your smoke detectors. This one is easy,
so start here and get the maintenance excitement ramped up! Be sure
to get some extras for the TV remote too, so you’re ready to
cuddle up and watch a good movie on a chilly night.
- Chimney
Cleaning: Creosote buildup is one of the leading causes of house
fires. Have your chimney cleaned before you light the first fire of
the season. Don’t let a house fire be the first warning that your
chimney needs cleaning.
- Pipe
Wrappers: It seems hard to fathom with all the sweaty days we are
still having this “fall,” but soon enough it will be time to
wrap your pipes. Pick up some pipe wraps and faucet covers the next
time you’re at the store, so you’re ready to go before the cold
comes in.
- Critter
Watch: Do a visual inspection to see if there are any spots where
the critters are coming and going. If there are any holes (and
especially if the holes contain a pair of eyes looking back at you),
secure the opening ASAP. Also keep an eye out for signs of termites
or carpenter ants, while you’re doing your critter check.
- Vent
About It: Let’s talk about those dryer vents…clean them out!
Especially important if you haven’t cleaned them since you moved
in. It’s a fire risk and an easy fix.
- Filter Changing:
This one is an easy one to finish off the list and will help your
HVAC system run more efficiently and extend the life of your unit.
Also, check any water filters (such as in your refrigerator or ice
maker) to see if they are in need of replacement.
I know home
maintenance isn’t fun, but if you’ll take a little time to
maintain your home, you’ll reduce your long term maintenance costs
and save yourself some headaches. Double win! Have a Happy Fall,
Y’all!
