Welcome to 2021…we finally made it! Can you believe it? The strangest year has passed and it’s time to make those yearly goals to yourself. Sure, you could go with a classic like dieting…but cake is good. My advice? Go with something more rewarding—get going on some #housegoals! Here are a few ideas to consider:
START A “HOUSE DIET”
Decluttering is one way to “lose weight” that is much easier than a juice cleanse. Don’t try to do it all at once—you’ve got a whole year! Dedicate one day per month to going through a room of the house. Go through every nook and cranny—closets, drawers, everything. Clutter builds up quickly, especially if you’ve been in your home for years. Don’t just pack it in a box and cram it in a closet or the garage—donate it or sell it! Let’s be real, The hardest part of decluttering is being honest with yourself and letting go of unneeded items. Ask yourself the questions: Do I need this? Do I actually use this? If you don’t need it or haven’t used it in the last 6 months, get rid of it! You’d be surprised how freeing it is to get rid of all the unwanted junk in your life. Bonus money can be made on items you decide to sell, too! Sometimes less really is more.
#GLOWUP YOUR HOUSE
You don’t need botox or a shopping spree. Well, you don’t, but your house might! 😉 Painting is one of the cheapest ways to get an (almost) instant makeover. There is little risk here because if you end of hating it, you are just a brush away from undoing it. Don’t be afraid to embrace the magic of paint!
If you don’t feel like painting, try redecorating and move some things around. You don’t have to buy all new furniture (or even buy anything!). Rearranging is free! If you’re on a budget, there are many free redecorating options! Switch around your artwork, rearrange your furniture or repurpose your unused space into something you’ll actually use and enjoy!
#bigGOALS start with a plan
Dreaming of a remodel? Begin budgeting for your plans so you can complete your remodel and enjoy it for years to come. If you don’t make a plan, it will never happen. Don’t wait until right before you decide to sell to remodel it, if you can help it. That way you can enjoy your hard work/money and also enjoy the higher sales price it brings when you go to sell.
“Exercise” Regularly
I don’t expect you to do 100 push ups every morning…unless that’s your thing. If so, you do you! However, we all know the more exercise you get, the better you look and the healthier you are. A house is no different. Resolve to stay on top of maintenance issues in the New Year. It will pay big time both in the good looks of your house and down the road when you go to sell. Few things cost more than deferred maintenance and repairs don’t get cheaper the longer you wait.
New Year’s Resolutions aren’t always fun—usually it is something you want to change, which has a negative connotation to it. However, 2021 is a fresh opportunity to make a positive change at home, without ever having to count calories.
