May 2018 Home Maintenance Tips
It’s finally gotten warm outside! 100 degree weather is just on the horizon, so make sure your house is summer ready with these monthly maintenance tips for the month of May:
- WALK ABOUT – Walk around the perimeter of your house and look for any recent damage—especially in light of all the recent storms we have had. Look for missing or damaged roof shingles, siding or any other areas that may need some attention. Since we’ve had so much rain lately, be sure to pay attention to any potential drainage issues. If you notice problems with pooling water or water seepage, correct it quickly before it turns into a bigger problem.
- DANG VARMINTS – “Varmint” is the super scientific term for squirrels, bats, raccoons, rats, etc. in East Texas. The only good varmint is one that is far, far away from your house. While you’re on your walk about, keep an eye out for critter holes. If there are any holes (and especially if the holes contain a pair of eyes looking back at you), figure out a way to get the varmint out and secure the opening immediately. Animals in an attic can do a lot of damage and can be dangerous if they chew through the wrong wires—and the sound of movement in the attic is just straight up creepy!
- CLEAN OUT THE GARAGE – These moderate temperatures offer a great excuse to clean out the garage before it gets too hot. The garage is often a final resting ground for stuff that has no other home. Be ruthless—get rid of the stuff that needs to go! Junk gathers quickly, especially in summer months, so the more you get rid of now, the less you’ll have to deal with later.
- FILL THE GRILL! – I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to the first BBQ of summer! Be prepped and ready by checking the propane tank levels and cleaning the interior and exterior of the grill. There’s nothing worse than having the meat prepped and no gas to cook with!
- Freshen up the Porch – Let’s end on a fun note, shall we? Summer shindigs, swimming and hanging out with your friends in the backyard are a fun part of summer. All those festivities mean it is high season for houseguests, so make sure your porch is “guest ready.” It doesn’t have to be a big thing—a fresh welcome mat, a thorough sweeping and maybe a flower pot or two to top it off!
Home maintenance isn’t most people’s idea of a roaring good time, but (unfortunately) somebody’s got to do it. Get a jump on it now, so you can have a fantastic summer of R&R, friends and perfectly grilled burgers in your fantastically maintained home.
