June Home Maintenance Tips for your East Texas Home
Summer is here! Before the dog days really begin, make sure your house is ready for summer with these quick home maintenance tips:
Tip#1: Check out your water situation.
This is even more important due to all the recent downpours we have had lately. Walk around your property looking for any previously unnoticed damage, paying special attention to any potential water drainage issues. If you have standing water or mushy spots, consider installing a French drain or redirecting water away from your house another way. Standing water near the foundation is not good, so make sure water does not pool near the foundation. If you have gutters, check for any gutter damage and quickly repair any problems. If your gutters have holes, have become disconnected, or dumping water right by the foundation, they are doing more harm than good. Drainage maintenance isn’t very fun, but water damage can expensive, so its always best to catch it and fix it early!
Tip#2: “Kid-Proof” the yard.
Is your backyard ready for summer fun? Rusty nails, missing screws and splinters can put a serious damper on an afternoon spent outside. Inspect any outside play equipment (swing sets, trampolines, pools, etc.) and backyard furniture for dangers. Tighten bolts, check for rotted parts and fix any other unsafe problems before they end with tears and bandages. With all this rain comes freakishly fast growing grass, so be sure to timely mow the grass to prevent flea and tick infestations. Once they are in the yard, it is only a matter of time before they invade the house and they are even harder to get rid of once they are inside!
Tip #3: Have a foody cleaning party!
This is a great time to clean out the pantry and fridge!!! (If I say it with multiple exclamation points, it makes it super fun, right?!) Seriously though, most all pantries and fridges can use a good purging. There’s no reason to store that mayo that expired in 2002—you’re never going to (and really probably shouldn’t!) use it. Cleaning out the expired food won’t take long and as a bonus you’ll have more room for those summer snacks!
Tip#4: Get ready for grilling season!
It’s grillin’ time, yay! This is a fun one! Get a jump on BBQ season by checking the propane tank levels and cleaning the grill. There’s nothing worse than having steaks marinated and ready to grill, only to find out you’re out of propane. The horror!
Even though it is getting so hot and it may take a little more of a pep talk to make yourself get out there to do it, preventative maintenance goes a long way towards keeping your house in excellent shape. A little bit of “honey do” now will payoff big in the future!
