January House “Honey Do” List
Happy New Year! Now that the champagne has been popped and 2019 is in full swing, it’s time to get a few home maintenance items checked off that “honey do” list! Check out some items to tackle this month:
- Winterize! – You may have already done it, but winterize your home’s exterior. Drain and disconnect your garden hoses and wrap/insulate all exterior pipes and install faucet covers to protect your spigots. Bring any potted plants indoors or to the garage so they have a fighting chance to live to see spring. It’s also a smart idea to have a few blankets, plastic wrap or towels ready for your most delicate in-ground plants, in case we have some prolonged freezing weather.
- Appliance Care – This time of year we are inside a lot more than usual, so it’s a great time to do some inside honey do’s! A perfect example of an indoor project perfect for winter is appliance maintenance. I know you just can’t wait! Seriously though, appliances don’t get cleaned as often as they should. Give your kitchen appliances a deep clean, including the refrigerator coils. Every model is different, so check your manufacturer instructions on how to do it. If you’ve lost the manuals, google the make and model and you’ll likely find a free printable replacement manual. If your fridge has a water filter, check it to see if it’s time for a filter replacement.
- Beautiful on the Inside – This is the perfect weather… to enjoy the great indoors. Might as well put the time to good use by getting an interior project done. Painting walls or repainting woodwork are both great cold weather projects that don’t take too much time but offer a way to refresh your space.
- Beep Machine – What is the most annoying sound in the world? If you guessed a beeping smoke detector, you’re right! Before the insanity inducing beeps begin, test the batteries in your smoke detector and if needed, change them out. While you’ve got the batteries out, give the remote a fresh battery too!
- #NewFilter – Last up on the good ole honey do list is the fastest one! Change out your HVAC air filter. It’s a 2 minute fix! It will help your system run more efficiently and save you some money in the New Year!
It’s a new year and that means it’s a great time to start some new habits! Home maintenance will save you money and sanity in the long run! Cheers to a well-maintained house in 2019!
