Hot 2016 Home Design Trends
It’s still early in the year, but long enough to get a gauge on trending changes. Styles are constantly shifting and it’s hard to stay on top of what is “hot” and what is “not,” but have no fear, I’m here to help! I love watching how the home design trends are going, especially seeing what is going on in internet dream land vs. what people are really doing in their homes. It’s an interesting juxtaposition, for sure. Check out some of these hot trends making a debut in homes near you:
- Wood-Look Ceramic Tile – This hot new trend is popping up everywhere—from flooring to bathrooms. It looks like wood but can withstand more water! Colors range from whitewash to darkest brown. When I first heard about this, I was skeptical—I love some real wood—but I have to admit, it’s really beautiful!
- Grey Paint—It’s neutral, it’s fresh, it’s…GREY?! Yes, grey is adorning walls everywhere as the go-to that coordinates with almost any design! I image it comes in 35,625,544 shades so you can find the perfect fit.
- Kitchen Islands—There really isn’t a bad kind of island, is there? (Unless you’re a castaway on a deserted one, but I digress.) Kitchen islands are nothing new, but the popularity is always increasing. Designs in pops of color with highly functional features such as extra sinks, grill tops and more are surging into remodel projects and new builds alike.
- Farmhouse Sinks—The farmhouse craze certainly extends well beyond a sink, but the farmhouse sink is worth a mention because it is as drool-worthy as a sink can get.
- Framed Custom-look Mirrors—Mirrors are a focal point and I’m seeing clients ditching the flat “sheet mirrors” and trading out for smaller framed mirrors. This style has also been around for a while, but I expect to see more of it. This is an easy way to ditch the “pre-fab” look and get a more custom style. The devil is in the details and a switch in the mirror can give the bathroom a whole new vibe while being very economical.
- Drawers vs. Cabinets—In many newly remodeled kitchens, deep drawers are being chosen in lieu of traditional cabinets. It is nice to be able to pull out a drawer and be able to see all the way to the back, instead of losing the items in the abyss of the back of a shelf.
There is definitely a big following for design and aesthetics (especially those of a certain Waco-based design couple!) However, what you see on TV or on dream pin boards and what is in most people’s homes tends to vary drastically—and that is completely normal! However, small changes make for big smiles too and you don’t have to change every little thing to give yourself a little bit of trendy style.
