Hip & Timeless Home Design Tips
Hip & Timeless Home Design Tips
Home design trends rush in and out fast. It is expensive to change trends at the drop of a hat, but with well-chosen decisions, you can create a classic style that will stand the test of time. Everyone wants a hip home, but what if you could have a “hip” home that would still be great in 10 years? Check out these timeless design tips:
- Simple Colors: Neutrals will always be on trend. They match everything and just blend in. Whites and creams have been around forever—and that will likely never change. Even though white kitchens and bathrooms seem to be an of the moment trend, they have been around since houses were built.
- Accents: Instead of overloading a space with bright and busy colors and patterns, use one or two accent colors (against those classic neutral mainstays, of course.) A few examples of accents: a bold front door, wild colored throw pillows on a neutral sofa, or one accent wall color. You can change out the accent color to any trendy color you wish—and as soon as you want to go another way, just change out the small accents and voila—a fresh new “of the moment” look!
- Function before everything: Magazines make everything seem so streamlined and clean—and that is great. However, you actually live in your house. Choose furniture and spatial design that works with your daily life and then figure out how to make it pretty once it’s functional. For example, if you need lots of storage—add built-in shelving with doors so it can be closed up and instantly neat. Storage is probably the most timeless feature of all and will always be in demand.
- Declutter– Sometimes I think that “declutter!” is the unofficial real estate mantra, but it is solid advice. Less is more—even if the closets are bursting at the seams, the minimalist approach for displayed items is tried and true.
- Woodwork- Now before you think I’m crazy for saying woodwork is timeless, hear me out. The in vogue color of the woodwork may change, but typically nobody complains about having trim work, crown molding, built-in shelving or bead board accents. Stain and paint colors will change with the times, but the woodwork goes back to the functionality of a space, which works no matter what decade it is.
Don’t get me wrong, trendy homes look great and everyone wants a gorgeously updated house. However, if your design style follows the very trendy, of the moment look—it will probably look dated more quickly that you would like. If you focus on a classic look for the main design scheme and add easy to swap trendy items with it, you will always be lookin’ fresh with a timeless style.
