5 Legends and Superstitions in East Texas Real Estate
There are legends, superstitions and just plain old tall tales EVERYWHERE. Lucky numbers, unlucky numbers, salt over your shoulder, new brooms for luck, black cats…there are so many superstitions, I am sure I don’t even know most of them. I don’t put much stock in it, but at the same time, I don’t run around breaking mirrors and running under ladders, either! (Hey, better safe than sorry, right!?) Believe it or not, there are also many legends related to real estate. Check out a few superstitions that are common in East Texas:
- Numbers Matter – Would you buy a house on Friday the 13th or a house at 777 Main St? Do you make an offer price end with a certain lucky number? Some home shoppers wouldn’t be the least bit bothered, but you may be surprised to learn that some won’t even look at house because of its address. On the flip side, “lucky” numbered properties have the opposite effect. It’s definitely an interesting and less considered factor.
- Black Doors Sell – This has been relayed to me on two separate occasions, by two different ladies in real estate. One was my grandmother, who spent much of her life working in real estate; the other was a Dallas-area socialite and very successful house flipper. Both of them told me that when all else fails, paint the door black! Neither woman knew the other, but both told me that their secret when a house wouldn’t sell was to paint the door black.
- It’s just lucky! – Some “old” traditions are still around, such as horseshoes hung over a door for good luck, a lucky bamboo, or a pineapple for hospitality. I see all of these fairly often and they always bring a smile. It’s a sweet tradition and even sweeter if it brings luck!
- Wait for it – There is a somewhat silly superstition that if you put a “SOLD” sign in a yard before it closes, then it is cursed to never close or have major issues before closing. I think it is a bit paranoid, but better safe than sorry, I guess!
- Patron Saint – This is probably the most well known “good luck” real estate superstition. The superstition is that if you bury a St. Joseph statue in your yard near the “for sale” sign, your house will sell faster. You can buy St. Joseph “home seller kits” online. If you ever get bored, just check out the reviews. Interesting food for thought (and certainly cheaper than a remodel!)
Buried statues, black paint and numerology…sometimes real estate is a little quirky. Real estate is just like life…it’s sometimes a little weird. That’s one of the many things I love about Real Estate…you see and hear all kinds of things! Although, at the end of the day, a little good luck booster never hurts!
