March Home Maintenance Tips

I don’t want to jinx it, but I think Spring is here! The dogwoods and bluebonnets will be blooming soon and you know what that means for your house…spring cleaning! No matter what plans you have for Spring, make sure your home is ready for the season with these March home maintenance tips:

  1. GIVE YOUR A/C A HUG —Those hot hot hot summer days are coming soon to a house near you! Clean your A/C coils and change your air filter now so you’re ready to chill when the heat hits. If you’re not sure what a coil thingamajig is, call your HVAC company. Cleaning the coils and regularly changing the air filters will add years to the life of your unit and keep it running at peak performance.
  1. SMELL B GONE – Questionable odors coming from kitchen sinks is an easy problem to solve. Clean them out by slicing an orange or a lemon and run it through the disposal. This will kill any non-flowery odors from invading your kitchen. It’s also a great time to deep clean the kitchen sink!
  1. LOOKOUT BELOW!– Check underneath vanity cabinets for any signs of active leaks. Look and feel for any water on shut-off valves for slow leaks as well. Hopefully you find cabinets that are dry as a bone; but if you don’t, repair the leak and air out the cabinet. Once the cabinet is dry, clean carefully with bleach to help kill any mold or mildew that may be growing.
  1. BULB MAINTENANCE— Check the exterior light fixtures. Look for broken and/or burned out bulbs replace them all while you’ve got the ladder out. The days are about to get longer, but exterior lighting is a great security measure.
  1. SPRING IN YOUR STEP—The flowers are blooming and you know what that means—spring cleaning! (I know, just what you were hoping I’d say!) A great place to start is by deep cleaning your flooring and wiping down baseboards. If you have carpet, consider having your carpets professionally cleaned. Start washing and cleaning all fabric in your home—from rugs to curtains and anything in between, which will get rid of the dusty bits that have gathered since the last cleaning.

Home maintenance is a chore and it’s easy to let things slide a little during cold weather, but spring is a time of new beginnings and a great excuse to get caught up! A little maintenance goes a long way and will save you money and possibly a worry wrinkle or two.
